California, New Jersey Named Top Two Solar Power States

With many states now encouraging municipalities to find ways to use solar power, solar installations grew 102 percent in 2010, according to the United States Solar Insight report. With this in mind, the Solar Energy Industries Association named the top 10 states using solar energy, with four new states in the top 10.

California and New Jersey top the list by far, producing 258.9 megawatts and 137.1 megawatts respectively. The rest of the list is, in order; Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Florida, North Carolina and Texas.

The rest of the United States has a combined 135.2 megwatts combined, according to Calfinder.com.

New Jersey may have seen the biggest increase in solar power usage, as it grew from 57 megwatts in 2009 to the 137.1 megwatts in 2010.

In California, residents have the California Solar Inititaive, which may play a key role in the amount of use solar power gets. The program offers rebates for utility customers across the state.

According to the CSI's website, the program has a total budget of $2.167 billion between 2007 and 2016. and a goal to install 1,940 megwatts of new solar energy.
